A Pair Dr Nelson’s Improved Inhalers, a piece of medical history, c1900s.
A pair of Dr Nelson’s Improved Inhaler. The larger size (19cm H) is vintage, made in England from the early 1900’s, with the directions for use printed on the front. The medium size (17cm H) is made in Meyerton c 1960’s, with the directions for use printed on the side. Interesting piece of medical history which make great conversation pieces and can be used as vases.
Between 1861 and 1865, Dr Nelson invented his Improved Inhaler for steam inhalations for respiratory ailments. It was produced by S. Maw & Son in London and was a simple, efficient and affordable device that was used widely. It was particularly useful in the home and was later made by other ceramic companies.
They would originally have had cork stoppers in the top with a hole for a glass breathing tube.
The Large one is in acceptable condition for is age, showing crazing.
The Medium is in good condition, with no cracks or crazing.
