Lot 93:
Mixed Media on Board of a Semi-Nude Lady Draped with Chiffon Sitting on a Stool . Framed behind glass. Signed By Sandy de Villiers (1947-2023).
This artwork on board portrays a semi-nude lady in flowing chiffon, seated upon a stool. The artist skillfully blends various materials and techniques, creating a visually stunning piece that balances sensuality and grace. The interplay of textures, colors, and layers adds depth to the composition, evoking a sense of both vulnerability and empowerment. Through this evocative portrayal, the artist invites viewers to explore themes of beauty, introspection, and the interconnection between human form and fabric.
Sandra L. du Toit was born in The Strand near Cape Town. The eldest of four children, but the only girl until she was 13, she balanced rough and tumble games with her brothers and a love of drawing and painting. She learned to love beautiful things and places very young. Spending a few years living at Rhebokskloof as a child, opened her eyes to the history and gravitas of a harsh, but beautiful world outside of her family home. This would translate later into an artist who embodied these contradictions and would, eventually, blend them to harmony, as she did with the oils on her canvases.
