Description
A magnificent and intellectually distinguished pair of framed vintage map reproductions featuring two of the most historically significant cartographic works of the 16th century. The first is the Russiae, Moscoviae et Tartariae Descriptio, originally created by Anthony Jenkinson and published by the celebrated Flemish cartographer Abraham Ortelius in 1570, one of the most important early maps of Russia and the surrounding regions. The second is the Turcici Imperii Descriptio, Ortelius’s celebrated Description of the Turkish Empire, also from 1570 and published in his landmark atlas Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, widely regarded as the first true modern world atlas and a cornerstone of cartographic history. Together these two reproductions represent a paired window into 16th century European geographical knowledge and cartographic artistry at its most celebrated. Antique map reproductions of this historical significance are actively collected by lovers of cartographic history, antiquarian prints and classical European scholarship, and a matching pair from the same publisher and period offers wonderful cohesion and combined display impact. Sold as-is, viewing recommended.
