Lot 53:
A Queen Anne Style Mahogany Serpentine Front Canteen Chest on Stand and a Collection of Flatware
Description
A mahogany canteen chest on stand in the Queen Anne style, featuring a serpentine front and five graduated drawers. The chest is constructed with mahogany veneers showing a book-matched grain pattern to the drawer fronts. Each drawer is fitted with a pair of brass foliate drop handles and a central brass escutcheon. The interior of the drawers contains fitted, burgundy felt-lined compartments for flatware storage. The chest is mounted on a stand with four cabriole legs terminating in pad feet. The drawer carcasses are constructed from a secondary softwood with dovetail joints.
The chest contains a varied collection of flatware and serving pieces across multiple sets and patterns. This includes a gold-tone electroplated service with ornate rococo scrollwork handles and several silver-plated services in traditional patterns, including a beaded edge design. Specialized serving items are present, such as salad servers, cake lifters, large serving spoons, and a cheese plane with a turned wooden handle. A set of modern stainless steel flatware includes pieces with white handles. One knife blade is printed with the characters SORLING STAINLESS. Other pieces bear various impressed marks including manufacturer names and material designations consistent with 20th-century production.
