Lot 70:
A Chinese Hand Carved Wood Figure of Shou Lao
Description
Standing approximately 20cm high. A Chinese hand carved hardwood figural sculpture depicting Shou Lao, the God of Longevity. The figure is carved in the round from a dense, dark reddish-brown stained wood. The deity is represented with a traditionally elongated cranium, a long flowing beard with fine incised linear detailing, and draped robes. He is depicted holding a gnarled staff in his right hand and a spray of peaches in his left, symbols of immortality. The figure stands upon a naturalistic, rockwork-style base. The carving features deep undercutting to the sleeves and robes, providing a sense of depth and movement. The underside of the base shows rough-hewn chisel marks and a natural wood grain, with no visible maker’s marks, signatures, or reign marks.
